MOTOR VEHICLE INFORMATION:
HAVE A NEW CAR PURCHASE?
WANT TO TRANSFER YOUR EXISTING LICENSE PLATE TO YOUR NEW CAR PURCHASE?

You can transfer license plates from one vehicle (old car) to another vehicle (new purchase), if the following criteria are met:

  • At least one of the vehicle owner(s) must be the titled owner on both the previous and the new vehicle records. Note: with the creation of a trust, a transfer of license plates from trustee or the creator of the trust to the trust vehicle registration records may take place when proof of the trustee/trust creator is provided to the county’s satisfaction. When supporting documentation cannot be provided, the issuance of a new license plate should occur;
  • New vehicle record must be eligible for the license plate type and configuration being transferred. Example: a personalized Passenger license plate with seven characters cannot be transferred to a motorcycle registration record, because a personalized Motorcycle license plate cannot have more than six characters;

When a request to transfer a license plate is made during the month of vehicle registration expiration or the one-month grace period, there is no ownership tax, license fee or special fee credit. Transfer plate fees are not charged to registrations which exempt both ownership tax and license fees (city/county/state vehicles/free military).

The following license plates are not permitted to be transferred:

  • Dealer plates, because they are not registered to a specific vehicle;
  • Registration and Titling product. Example: Special Mobile Machinery (SMM) Ownership Decals cannot be transferred.

County Offices will be closed on Monday, February 15, 2021 for Presidents Day.
